Entrapment Protection Devices
Monitored entrapment protection devices are required to protect all entrapment zones in automated gate applications. Photo‐cells are used as type B1 (non‐contact sensors) devices. Electric edges are used as type B2 (contact sensors) devices.
Monitored Entrapment Protection
Type B1 non-contact devices (such as photo-beams) and/or Type B2 contact sensors (such as reversing edges) are required for most automatic gate system applications. DKS gate operators require a minimum of one (1) device to be connected in each direction of travel – otherwise, the operator will not run. All entrapment devices used with DKS gate operators are monitored per the requirements of the UL 325 Standard for Safety.
Non-Contact Photo Beam Detector
- Compatible with all DKS Gate Operators.
- When the Photo Beam is blocked by a person or object obstructing the gate path the Operator automatically reverses the gate to avoid injury and/or damage to the obstruction, gate, and Gate Operator.
- Compliant with the UL 325 Standard for Safety.
- Customers can add a Photo Beam to each end of the gate or pair it with the Edge Detector. When installed correctly and combined with the inherent Fail-Safe Clutch design this setup provides a safe operating environment.
Barrier Gate Safety
In today’s busy world people often forget to pay attention to their surroundings and can inadvertently place themselves in harm’s way. DKS Barrier Operators (1601, 1602, and 1603) now offer the DKS Pedestrian Protection System, a vehicular/pedestrian detection system that knows when it’s safe to allow the Barrier Arm to come down — or not. The System reverses the Barrier Arm if a person is detected, and lowers the Barrier Arm if an unauthorized vehicle enters, preventing accidents and injury.
Features
TYPE B1
Intended to be positioned in such a way that an obstruction in a hazardous area will interrupt the light beam. An interruption of the beam will signal the Operator to either stop, or stop and reverse motion. Complies with monitored external entrapment protection as per UL 325.
Reflective Photo Eyes
Reflective Photo Optic Systems consists of an Emitter/Receiver unit and a Reflector. Since the Reflector directs the beam back to the Photo Eye, wiring to the other side of the roadway is not required. These are typically used with shorter gates.
Thru-Beam Photo Eyes
Thru-Beam Photo Eye Systems consist of one Infrared Emitter and one Infrared Receiver housed and powered in separate units. These are typically used with longer gates.

Protect the integrity of the parking facility and prevent those inadvertent accidents from happening. After all, you have better things to do than deal with liability problems.
